What is the best time of year to visit Key West?

There really isn't a bad time to visit Key West, but the experience changes considerably throughout the year.

November through April generally brings cooler temperatures and is the most popular time to visit Key West. It's great weather for walking around Old Town, dining outside and exploring the island.

It's also our busiest season, so expect larger crowds and higher hotel prices.

May through October is hotter, more humid and typically less crowded. Summer is also one of our favorite times to get out on the water. Calm summer days can mean beautiful conditions for Key West sandbar trips, snorkeling and boating.

Keep in mind that Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, so travel insurance is always worth considering when traveling during this time.

What should I pack for Key West?

Wondering what to pack for a Key West vacation? The good news is that Key West is extremely laid-back. You don't need to overpack or bring an entirely different outfit for every night.

Casual is the norm in Key West — even at many of our nicer restaurants. Think comfortable, tropical and practical.

Here are a few Key West packing essentials we recommend:

• Lightweight, breathable clothing – Shorts, sundresses, tank tops and T-shirts are perfect for our warm, tropical weather.
• Comfortable walking shoes – You'll probably do more walking than you expect, especially around Old Town and Duval Street.
• Sandals or flip-flops – You'll live in them here.
• Swimsuits – Bring more than one if you're planning beach, pool or boat days.
• Reef-friendly sunscreen – The Florida Keys sun is strong, even when it's cloudy.
• Sunglasses and a hat – Especially important for days spent on the water.
• A reusable water bottle – Staying hydrated is important in Key West's heat and humidity.
• A small dry bag or waterproof phone pouch – Very useful for Key West sandbar trips, snorkeling tours and boat charters.
• Bug spray – Helpful if you'll be outside around sunset, in the backcountry or exploring some of the quieter areas of the Keys.

Is Key West known for beautiful beaches?

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about Key West.

Key West is not primarily a beach destination, it is a boating destination.

The Florida Keys are built largely on ancient coral limestone rather than expansive natural sandy beaches. Some of Key West's beaches have sand that has been brought in or replenished.

If you're coming to Key West expecting miles of white sandy beaches like other Caribbean destinations, you may be surprised.

But get on a boat and you'll discover an entirely different side of Key West.

The Key West backcountry and sandbars are where you'll find shallow turquoise water, natural sandy areas and some of the scenery visitors picture when they imagine the Florida Keys.

This is why one of our biggest recommendations for anyone visiting Key West is simple:

What is a Key West sandbar?

A Key West sandbar is a naturally shallow area offshore where sand accumulates and the water can become shallow enough to stand, swim and relax.

Sandbars are reached by boat and are completely different from Key West's public beaches.

A Key West sandbar trip may include cruising through the backcountry, swimming in shallow water, relaxing at the sandbar, snorkeling and exploring areas that you simply can't reach from land.

For many visitors, getting out to the sandbars ends up being one of their favorite things they do in Key West.

It depends on the experience you're looking for.

A shared Key West sandbar trip is a great option for couples, solo travelers or smaller groups who don't want to pay for an entire boat. You purchase individual seats and share the charter with other guests.

A private Key West boat charter gives your group the entire boat and much more flexibility. Your captain can customize the trip based on your interests, weather and conditions.

Can you snorkel in Key West?

Yes! Snorkeling in Key West can include coral reefs, shallow backcountry areas, sponge gardens and marine life.

Conditions vary depending on wind, tides and weather, so the best snorkeling location isn't necessarily the same every day.

That's one advantage of going with an experienced local captain who can choose locations based on the conditions.

Is the water in Key West always clear and turquoise?

No and this is important to understand before visiting.

The appearance of the water around Key West changes with wind, tides, weather, currents, storms and seasonal conditions.

One side of the island can look completely different from another on the same day.

This is also why you may see incredibly turquoise water in photos from a Key West sandbar or boat trip while the water at a beach on the island looks completely different.

Don't judge Key West's water based on one beach!

Does Key West get sargassum?

Yes. Sargassum can affect Key West, particularly during the warmer months.

Sargassum is naturally occurring floating brown seaweed that travels through the Atlantic and Caribbean with ocean currents. Florida wildlife officials report that abundance typically peaks during the spring and summer months.

A broader South Florida sargassum season is generally considered March through October.

Impacts in Key West can vary significantly depending on currents, winds and location.

Atlantic-facing beaches tend to be more susceptible to sargassum, while other areas around Key West and the backcountry may look completely different.

This is important: sargassum at one Key West beach does not mean the water everywhere around Key West looks the same.

Are there beachfront hotels with pools in Key West?

Yes, but true beachfront hotels in Key West are much more limited than many first-time visitors expect.

Key West is not lined with large sandy beaches and beachfront resorts like you'll find in some other Florida destinations.

Many hotels advertised as oceanfront or waterfront hotels in Key West sit along seawalls, marinas or rocky shoreline and do not have a traditional sandy beach.

If having both a beach and a pool at your Key West hotel is a must-have, there are options but expect these properties to come with a higher price tag, especially during peak season.

Some Key West beachfront resorts with pools to consider include:

Casa Marina Key West

Casa Marina is a historic Atlantic-side resort with the largest private beach in Key West, along with outdoor pools and a full resort experience.

The Reach Key West

The Reach is also located on the Atlantic side and offers an oceanfront pool and sand beach.

Southernmost Beach Resort

Located where Old Town meets the Atlantic, Southernmost Beach Resort offers three pools and a beach, while still putting guests close to Duval Street.

Pier House Resort & Spa

Pier House is located at the opposite end of Duval Street near Mallory Square and the Historic Seaport. It offers a small private white-sand beach and pool in an excellent Old Town location.

Sunset Key Cottages

For a luxury option, Sunset Key Cottages is located on a private island just offshore from Key West and is reached by boat. The resort offers a beach and pool, but expect luxury-level pricing.

Important: Consider Sargassum Season Before Booking a Beachfront Hotel

If you're specifically paying extra for a Key West beachfront hotel because you plan to spend a lot of time on the beach, pay attention to which side of the island the property is located on.

The Atlantic-facing side of Key West can be affected by seasonal sargassum, particularly during the warmer months (June - August).

Properties on the south/Atlantic side of Key West, including Casa Marina, The Reach and Southernmost Beach Resort, can experience sargassum along their beaches during the season.

The amount varies tremendously from day to day and year to year depending on winds, currents and offshore conditions.

This does not mean these aren't beautiful resorts or that their beaches will always have seaweed. It simply means that if having a pristine hotel beach is the main reason you're paying extra for a beachfront resort, it's something you should know before booking.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Key West is assuming that every waterfront hotel has a sandy beach.

Waterfront, oceanfront and beachfront do not mean the same thing in Key West.

Is Key West good for families with kids?

Absolutely. There are plenty of family-friendly things to do in Key West beyond Duval Street.

Families can enjoy sandbar trips, snorkeling, dolphin watching, fishing, sunset cruises, Fort Zachary Taylor, the Butterfly Conservatory, the Shipwreck Museum and other outdoor activities.

A private boat charter can be especially convenient for families because the day can be planned around your group's interests and comfort level.

Do I need a car in Key West?

Not necessarily.

Key West is a small island, and if you're staying in or near Old Town, many restaurants and attractions are within walking distance.

Visitors also use bikes, scooters, golf carts, taxis and rideshare services.

If you're staying farther from Old Town or planning to explore the Lower Keys, having a vehicle can be helpful.

One thing to keep in mind: parking in Old Town can be difficult and expensive, so having a rental car isn't always an advantage if most of your vacation will be spent in downtown Key West.

Where should I stay in Key West?

The best area to stay in Key West depends entirely on the type of vacation you want.

Old Town Key West is great if being able to walk to restaurants, attractions and nightlife is important.

The Historic Seaport area provides easy access to restaurants, boats and waterfront activities.

The Truman Annex area can be a great option for visitors who want to be close to Old Town while having a slightly quieter atmosphere.

Hotels farther from downtown can offer a quieter, more resort-style, laid back experience, you'll rely more heavily on transportation but lot of hotels offer free shuttle services.

There isn't one hotel that's perfect for everyone, which is why we recommend choosing based on your priorities rather than simply booking whichever hotel appears first online.

Is Duval Street all there is to do in Key West?

Definitely not!

Duval Street is one part of Key West, but it isn't the entire Key West experience.

Explore the Historic Seaport, walk the quieter streets of Old Town, visit local museums, try locally owned restaurants and most importantly, get out on the water.

Some of the most beautiful parts of Key West aren't accessible by car or on foot.

What is the best beach in Key West?

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is one of our most commonly recommended beaches in Key West.

The beach is naturally rocky, so water shoes can be helpful. You'll also find shaded areas, picnic spots and the historic fort.

Other Key West beaches include Smathers Beach, Higgs Beach and Simonton street Beach.

Remember that beach and water conditions can change daily.

When is hurricane season in Key West?

Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't visit Key West during those months. Thousands of visitors do, and summer can offer fantastic boating conditions.

However, travelers visiting during hurricane season should consider flexible reservations and travel insurance.

Is Key West expensive?

Yes, Key West can be an expensive vacation destination, particularly when it comes to accommodations.

The most expensive time to visit Key West generally coincides with peak season, roughly December through April, when visitors head south for warm weather while much of the country is experiencing winter.

Christmas and New Year's, Presidents' Day weekend, spring break and other popular winter weekends can be especially expensive.

There are also major events outside the traditional peak season that can cause Key West hotel prices to jump significantly. Fantasy Fest in October is one of the biggest examples, with accommodations often booking well in advance.

If you're trying to visit Key West on a budget, late spring, summer and portions of fall can sometimes offer lower hotel rates and fewer crowds.

Just remember that summer is hotter, hurricane season runs June through November, and sargassum can affect Atlantic-facing beaches during the warmer months.

One way to save on activities is to look at shared Key West boat trips and shared sandbar charters. Instead of paying for an entire private boat, you can purchase seats individually while still getting out on the water and experiencing the Key West backcountry.

Our biggest advice is to decide what matters most to you. You don't necessarily need the most expensive beachfront hotel to have an incredible Key West vacation, especially when some of the most beautiful water and natural sandy areas are actually offshore and reached by boat.

How many days do you need in Key West?

For a first visit, 3 to 5 days in Key West gives you enough time to experience Old Town, enjoy restaurants and attractions, spend a day on the water and still have time to relax.

If you want to include fishing, multiple boat days or a Dry Tortugas trip, staying longer is even better.

Can I take a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park from Key West?

Yes.

Dry Tortugas National Park is approximately 70 miles west of Key West and can be reached by ferry, seaplane or private boat.

Because transportation can sell out, particularly during busy travel periods, this is one Key West activity we recommend planning ahead.
