Fort Zachary Taylor Beach Key West: Everything You Need to Know
If you ask me what my favorite beach in Key West is, Fort Zachary Taylor is it!
Located at the southern end of Key West inside Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, this beach has a little bit of everything — beautiful water, plenty of natural shade, great snorkeling right from shore, and an incredible historic fort to explore.
It’s not your typical soft, white-sand Florida beach. Fort Zach has a naturally rocky shoreline, which is actually one of the reasons the snorkeling can be so good. If you’re looking for a beach day that combines swimming, snorkeling, nature and a little Key West history, this is one of the best places to go.

What Is Fort Zachary Taylor Beach Like?
Fort Zach has a completely different feel from Smathers Beach or Higgs Beach.
The beach is surrounded by trees and tropical vegetation, so there are plenty of shady areas where you can escape the Key West sun. The water can be absolutely beautiful on a calm, clear day, and the rocky areas just offshore create habitat for fish and other marine life.
One thing you should know before visiting: the shoreline is rocky. I highly recommend bringing water shoes. They'll make getting in and out of the water much more comfortable.
Christina’s Local Tip
This is my favorite beach in Key West! I love Fort Zach because you get plenty of shade, great snorkeling right from the beach, and you can explore the historic fort all in the same visit. Bring water shoes and snorkeling gear and plan to spend a few hours here!
Swimming at Fort Zach
Fort Zach is a great place to swim, especially when the water is calm.
Water conditions around Key West can change depending on the wind, tides and weather. Some days the water is incredibly clear and calm, while other days can be a little rougher.
Because there are rocks along the shoreline and in the water, water shoes are definitely recommended.
Snorkeling at Fort Zachary Taylor
One of the biggest reasons I recommend Fort Zach is the shore snorkeling.
The rocky areas and rock formations offshore attract fish and other marine life, making this one of my favorite Key West beaches for grabbing a mask and snorkel and exploring right from shore.
Visibility varies depending on wind and water conditions, so snorkeling is generally best on a calm, clear day.
Explore Historic Fort Zachary Taylor
Don't come here just for the beach!
Fort Zachary Taylor is a historic Civil War-era fort and one of Key West's most interesting historical attractions. You can walk through the fort, explore its brick corridors and learn more about its history.
Combining the fort with the beach is part of what makes Fort Zach such a great half-day Key West activity.
It's also a great option for families because you can break up your beach day with something completely different.
Plenty of Natural Shade
This is one of the things I personally love most about Fort Zach.
Unlike some of Key West's more open beaches, Fort Zach has mature trees and naturally shaded areas around the beach and picnic areas.
If you're visiting during the hotter months, that shade makes a HUGE difference.
The best shady spots can fill up on busy days, so arriving earlier gives you a better chance of finding a great spot.

Getting to Fort Zachary Taylor
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is located at the southwest end of Key West, close to Old Town.
You can get there by:
- Driving
- Biking
- Taxi or rideshare
Because the beach is located inside the state park, you'll enter through the park entrance and follow the road to the beach area.
Parking & Entrance Fees
Parking is available inside Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, so you don't have to worry about finding street parking once you arrive.
Because Fort Zach is a Florida State Park, there is an entrance fee. Current admission rates are:
- $6 per vehicle for 2–8 people, plus a $0.50 Monroe County surcharge per person
- $4.50 for a single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle, surcharge included
- $2.50 per person for pedestrians and bicyclists, surcharge included
For example, two people arriving together in one vehicle would pay $7 total.
The park is open 8:00 AM until sundown, 365 days a year, while the historic fort closes at 5:00 PM.
Christina’s Local Tip
The entrance fee is absolutely worth it! Parking is included, and you get access to the beach, snorkeling, shaded picnic areas and the historic fort all in one place.
Fees and hours can change, so check the current information before your visit.

Food & Drinks at Fort Zachary Taylor
You don't have to leave the park when you're ready for lunch or a cold drink! Cayo Hueso Café is located right near the beach and serves casual beach food, snacks, cold drinks and frozen drinks. There's also a shaded deck overlooking the water, which makes it a nice place to get out of the sun for a bit.

Beach Rentals & Activities
Fort Zachary Taylor is one of the best beaches in Key West if you want more to do than simply sit on the sand. You can swim, snorkel right from shore, fish, paddle, explore the historic fort or bike around the park. Snorkel equipment is available to rent, along with beach chairs and umbrellas.
Is Fort Zach Good for Kids?
Yes!
Families can easily spend several hours here between swimming, looking for fish, having lunch or a picnic, and exploring the fort.
Just remember that this is a rocky beach, so I'd definitely bring water shoes for the kids.
As always, keep an eye on current water conditions and supervise children closely around the water.
Does Fort Zach Get Sargassum?
One advantage of Fort Zach's location is that it can be less impacted by sargassum than some of Key West's Atlantic-facing beaches, particularly during heavier sargassum periods.
That doesn't mean it never gets seaweed. Conditions around Key West can change with the winds, tides and currents.
If you're visiting during sargassum season, it's always worth checking current beach conditions rather than assuming every Key West beach will look the same.
Best Time to Visit Fort Zach
Fort Zach can be enjoyed year-round, but I especially love going when the winds are lighter and the water is calm.
For snorkeling, calmer conditions generally mean better visibility.
If you're visiting during the hotter months, arrive earlier in the day, grab a shady spot and bring plenty of water.
Late afternoon can also be beautiful here, especially as the sun starts getting lower over the water.
